Youth at Heart manages nine recreation centers located in Tulsa’s public housing
communities and low-income apartment complexes. Each of our recreation centers is
managed by an on-site Youth at Heart Recreational Director. Hours of operation during
the school year are Tuesday through Friday from 2 pm to 8 pm. During the summer,
hours of operation are Monday through Friday from 9 am to 4 pm. Recreation centers
offer tutoring, life enrichment activities, youth groups, table games, organized
sports leagues, and services of other agencies such as 4-H, Scouting and Family
and Children’s Services.

By definition, families residing in subsidized housing are economically disadvantaged,
most with a high rate of unemployment living at or below 100% of poverty. The majority
of families are minorities: African American, Native American, Asian and Hispanic.
Subsidized housing complexes experience the problems of juvenile delinquency, drug
abuse among parents and youth, teen pregnancy, and crime. Youth at Heart recreation
centers keep kids “off the street” by providing a safe, supervised environment for
youth to hang out, play, study, engage in team sports and develop social skills
and values.
